Mission
We are a group of students committed to nourishing cultural, intellectual, political and
economic awareness about the African continent and its connection to the JMU community. We
value people from different backgrounds who hold different ideas about life and we celebrate the
diversity of our campus and our world. We also organize various cultural and promotional events
to build community and foster collaboration amongst African students and those interested in
Africa, and to encourage awareness of Africa within our JMU community and in the greater
Harrisonburg area, ultimately contributing back to our continent.

ASO often organizes events that celebrate African culture, including fashion shows, dance performances, and cultural workshops. Joining allows you to immerse yourself in and learn about different African traditions. It offers a community of students who share a common interest in African culture. This can lead to forming friendships, finding mentors, and feeling a sense of belonging on campus. The organization may host talks, seminars, and discussions on various topics related to Africa, such as history, politics, economics, and social issues. This can broaden your knowledge and perspective

We aspire to enhance and expose the talents of participating members through modeling and dance, in showcases and exhibitions. We instill confidence, leadership, and professionalism while building self-esteem in all participating individuals. We strive to present ourselves with class, style, and power representing the new age of fashion.

i. Membership in this organization is open to all JMU students and will not be restricted on the basis of age, ability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, color, religion, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or political affiliation.
ii. All members are required to sign a contract that will remain valid for the entire school year.
iii. All members are required to attend ALL meetings, practices, and events unless a valid reason is communicated to the President or Vice President.
iv. New members are able to be accepted throughout the fall semester with the signing of a contract, payment of dues, and understanding of Esteem Model's core values and mission statement.
v. New members will NOT be accepted after the second week of January in the spring semester unless otherwise authorized by the President.
vi. Membership for all members can not directly be revoked, however, noticeable activeness, dedication, and seriousness of membership can and will be considered when determining if the member deserves to be in shows, showcases, or any other social event that is a privilege of membership.

Ethiopian & Eritrean Student Association is a heritage club that celebrates the cultures of Ethiopia and Eritrea. EESA is a unique cultural organization on the JMU campus that aims to provide a welcoming space for anyone that is interested in immersing themselves within the rich culture.

In addition, we want to bridge the gap between the people who want to help and the ones who so desperately need it. As multicultural students of JMU, we want to connect the diaspora of our school, and while doing so, our other priority is to give back to our communities through various fundraising events held on campus. Previously, as part of our fundraising efforts, we partnered up with organizations like Wax and Gold, located in Ethiopia, whose mission is to help infants in hospitals by providing sustainable healthcare and materials. We helped donate Neo-Tee® respirator packets which have helped over 2000 infants in delivery rooms across two hospitals located in Ethiopia. Our mission moving forward is to give aid to similar organizations.

Grupo Candela is a Semi-Competitive Latin dance team at James Madison University. Our goal is to showcase the Latinx Culture and promote Cultural awareness through campus. We strive to provide opportunities for JMU students to receive and enhance their skills in Latin Dancing while also learning the value of discipline, teamwork, and culture. Grupo Candela brings a diverse group of individuals together as a unit and strives for excellence through Latin Dance Education and performance.

James Madison University’s Hillel aims to connect Jewish Students through activities and religious events to build the Jewish community within JMU. Hillel offers students the chance to learn about Judaism from both cultural and religious perspective. We have a variety of events to cater to all branches of Judaism. We also provide rides to local Harrisonburg synagogue services and hope to have our own in the future.

The target audience are Jewish JMU students. Our average sized event is 10-15 people with our largest event at over 50 people in attendance. James Madison University has about 400 students who identify as Jewish and we are working greatly to get them engaged with Hillel.

As an organization under the Center for Multicultural Student Services (CMSS), Mozaic Dance Team is committed to cultivating a diverse, inclusive environment for all members. We recognize that as an open style/choreography team, we are partaking in black culture and seek to educate all members on the history of hip-hop so that we may continue to resist racism, discrimination, and other forms of stigmatization that have been used to separate and disempower people. Mozaic Dance Team will always strive to increase diversity and representation from all communities, both internally and in its programming within James Madison University and the dance community at large.

To promote JMU as a progressive and ethnically diverse university. To foster a balance between leadership, social and academic development. Also, to help coordinate programs that encourage students of color to attend JMU and to increase the awareness of minority life at JMU. We are a liaison to the Harrisonburg community through our service projects and we promote diversity and unity with minority organizations and students.

Students for Minority Outreach was founded on the campus of James Madison University in 1989. It started out as co-committee to the Black Student Alliance and has since grown into a remarkable establishment of young, dedicated, and motivated students, who are eager to promote diversity and to recruit minorities in becoming a part of our JMU family. The Executives and Members of SMO also strive to reach out to our own Harrisonburg community, as well as host a variety of events throughout the year.

In the 2001-2002 school year, Students for Minority Outreach became the second CMSS organization to become Organization of the Year. In 2005, Students for Minority Outreach was also awarded the Dolly Madison Award, an award for Campus Wide Activity for Skate Jam, and the Best Student Run Organization award with NAACP. With each year, SMO looks forward to planning a successful and exciting year with and for all of its members, co-sponsors, and prospective students, and with a fresh, new start already underway, we hope for yet another year to be just as memorable.
